Darkly Dreaming Dexter

If you haven’t seen Showtime’s Dexter, then you’re missing one of the best–and possibly one of the most psychologically complex–television shows ever made. Based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, the show stars Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) as Dexter Morgan, a serial killer who works as a blood-spatter specialist for the Miami Police Department. If the premise sounds odd, it is. In fact, when the show was first being marketed with such tawdry slogans as “Finally, a serial killer you can root for,” it seemed as if it was destined for the trash heap. However, the show offers a decidedly original take on the crime procedural, and it blends in some of the best elements of noir. The final episode of its debut season, “Born Free,” is a case in point.

As a character, Dexter sees the world through a glass, darkly.

  1. What a great season finale that was. The story lines that you wanted to be wrapped up were done so (and nicely at that) and there were just enough hooks to make you count down the weeks until it starts all over again.

When season one comes out on DVD it will be a definite purchase to add to my library.
